Mount Lookout Like Hyde Park and Mount Adams, Mount Lookout was once known by a previous name. For instance, Hyde Park was originally known as Mornington. Mount Adams was originally known as Mount Ida. The community of Mount Lookout was once known as Delta.
The name changed to Mount Lookout sometime after 1872, when the huge 16" telescope (which had been dedicated by President Adams 30 years before) was moved from Mount Adams to Mount Lookout. Local residents were justifiably proud of this acquisition.
Acknowledgement should be extended to Ormsby McKnight Mitchel, a profressor at Cincinnati College, who tirelessly advocated for this observatory - which is the oldest professional operating observatory in the United States. In 1979, this observatory came under the auspices of the University of Cincinnati Physics department. Under their direction, the observatory is open to the public. You can become more involved by joining the Cincinnati Obervatory Center.
Mount Lookout is also home to the fourth largest park in Cincinnati - Ault Park. This is definitely one of our city's more beautiful parks. The formal garden was initially designed by George Kessler - later modified by A.D. Taylor. One of the more interesting additions to Ault Park came in 1964 when Miss Blanche McAvoy gave her superb collection of Roses to the park. This collection was added to and The Hilda Rothschild Memorial Old Fashioned Rose Garden was created.
Of the crown jewel of this neighborhood is Mount Lookout Square - the meeting place of many residents. These residents rave about such restaurants as: Annabel's Restaurant Aqua Beacon Food Market Dancing Wasabi - Sushi Restaurant Lucy Blue Pizzeria Lookout Joes - Mount Lookout Coffee Roasters Mount Lookout Tavern Nectar RestaurantNics Bar & Grill Ramundos Pizzeria Redmoor - 'Event House' Zips Cafe
Mount Lookout is a vibrant community with a heart that beats to the contemporary beat of Cincinnati.
