Mount Adams

In the earliest reaches of Cincinnati history, this 'rugged hill' was referred to as Mt Ida - after Ida Martin, a woman who lived on the hill and did a business as a washer-woman. The steep hillsides were considered an impediment to 'The Hills' development. But Nicholas Longworth began acquiring huge tracts in this area.

By the late 1820's Longworth had enough land to produce a wonderfully delightful wine from his acres of Catawba grapes. By the 1830's, Longworth was producing roughly 100,000 bottles of champagne-wine a year. Popularly known as "Golden Wedding", this champagne was praised throughout the land. In fact, it is said that this champagne is the inspiration for Cincinnati being referred to as "The Queen City".

The reference to Cincinnati as a 'Queen' was in a poem by no less than Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his pean to Longworth's "Golden Wedding" Champagne.

The richest and the best
Is the wine of the west
That grows by the beautiful river
And this song of the wine
This greeting of mine
The winds and the birds shall deliver
To the Queen of the West
In her garlands dressed
By the banks of the beautiful river.

Cincinnati's premier Eden Park was developed on land donated by the Longworth family.

In the 1850's the Longworth family vineyards were devastated by disease. Soon thereafter, Joseph Longworth donated the land to the city that would become Eden Park. This was followed in 1874 by construction of the Mt Adams Incline, which opened "The Hill" to residential development.

It's an interesting story about how Mt Adams came to be known by it's present name. In 1843, President John Quincy Adams came to Cincinnati to dedicate what was then the most powerful astronomical telescope in our nation. Originally located on Monastery, it was moved in 1873 to it's present location on Observatory Place in Mt Lookout.

Mt Adams can also point with pride to being the home of Rookwood Pottery - among the most renowned art pottery in the world! Construction of the Rookwood Pottery factory in Mt Adams was begun in 1891. The unique designs made Rookwood Pottery phenomenally successful. However, the depression caused severe losses which led to the eventual closure of the factory in 1941.

After a period of gradual neglect, this neighborhood began to attract those who were drawn by the fantastic river and city views - as well as the convenience to the downtown area. Beginning around 1960, many homes began to be exquisitely remodeled to take advantage of the unparalleled views.

Today, over 1300 residents live in Mount Adams. They are joined regularly by visitors who flock to the community to for such venues as:
