HISTORY: The origins of Hyde Park as we now know it, evolved from the vision of a syndicate that was formed around 1890 by Charles Kolgour, John Kilgour, James E. Mooney, Albert S. Berry, Wallace Burch, Simeon Johnson, John Zumstein & Thomas B. Youtsey. The name chosen by this syndicate was the Mornington Syndicate. In fact, Mornington was the initial name given to this development.
This group purchased all the land between Edwards Road, Observatory Road, and Padison Pike - plus extensive acreage east of Edwards Road. As development continued, it was decided to change the name of the neighborhood from Mornington to Hyde Park.
As Hyde Park developed, the community attracted residents who took great pride in their homes and status in the community. As such they built homes of quality that echoed the architectural styles prominent to that time. That is the reason this neighborhood has so many excellent examples of Foursquare, Tudor, Victorian, & Shingle styles of architecture.
This is a community that doesn't stand still. New condominiums continue to be developed. A most interesting building was created on Erie and Michigan. Under construction is a contemporary building on the corner of Erie and Shaw.
